4 Reasons Why Your AC Is Leaking Water

Radford VA's hot and humid summers create an immense workload for your air conditioner. Although you might not spend much time thinking about your home's cooling system, a leak near the indoor unit will certainly get your attention. Here are four possible causes of leaky air conditioners.

1. Dirty Air Filter

Dirty air filters cause a lot of AC issues, including leaks. Operating the AC with a dirty air filter leads to reduced airflow. This causes the evaporator coil to get too cold. When warm, moist air comes into contact with the coil, the moisture condenses and freezes. At the end of the cooling cycle, the ice melts and creates a puddle.

2. Refrigerant Leak

Leaking refrigerant causes your air conditioner's pressure to drop. Low pressure results in a frozen evaporator coil. Moisture condenses and freezes on the coil during each cooling cycle and melts between cycles. Listen for a bubbling or hissing sound from the indoor or outdoor unit of your cooling system. Only certified technicians can repair a refrigerant leak.

3. Clogged Condensate Drain

The wet, dark and warm area of the condensate drain is an ideal spot for mold, mildew and algae growth. This biofilm buildup eventually clogs the pipe. Once every couple of months, disconnect and rinse the pipe. Our technicians also do this during maintenance visits.

4. Dirty or Damaged Evaporator Coil

Dust buildup on the evaporator coil impedes airflow. This may cause the coil to freeze. A crack in the coil could also cause water to leak when humid air comes into contact with the cold refrigerant in the coil.
