Top Tips for Space Heater Safety
In some situations, space heaters can offer an ideal, compact, and effective heat source. However, it's also very important to heed all safety measures when using this kind of heater. To stay safe when using a space heater, take care to abide by the following tips.
Give Your Space Heater Space
To work properly and avoid causing an imminent fire danger, it's critical that space heaters be given ample, open space. Each space heater gives its own recommended clearance area, but in most cases, several feet of clear space on all sides of the heater is needed. This helps prevent items from being able to catch fire in the proximity of the heater.
Check Space Heater Components
Staying aware of your space heater's components and the condition they are in is another, crucial safety tip. If you're using an electric space heater, always make sure the cord is in good shape, not kinked or damaged, and the plug is fully inserted into its designated electrical outlet. If using kerosene or other fuel-burning heaters, be sure the fuel-holding vessel is in good condition and is sealed shut. Other components such as the heater's feet, controls, and safety cage should also be maintained in good condition.
Abide by Electrical Requirements
With electric space heaters, following the manufacturer's electrical requirements is another important step to take. Never use a heater that requires more wattage than what your electrical circuit can provide. While your home's circuit breakers and fuses should catch such overloads and then "trip" to safely stop the issue, this doesn't always happen. The end result could produce a spontaneous fire or severe electrical shock.
