Do You Still Need to Maintain Your AC in the Fall?
While summer is winding down, you might assume that there's nothing more you need to do with your air conditioner. With proper maintenance, a typical central air conditioning system lasts for 12 to 15 years. Here's what you need to do this fall to make sure that your Blacksburg, VA, home's cooling system achieves its expected lifespan.
Cut Vegetation
Over the summer months, vegetation may have grown close to the outdoor unit of the air conditioner. Now is a good time to cut or prune it back. The air conditioner needs 3 feet of clearance for the optimal dissipation of heat from your home. The dying vegetation attracts vermin in the winter, and branches laden with ice could snap off and damage the air conditioner.
Clean Debris and Dirt
By the end of summer, the fins and coils of the outdoor unit could have a thick layer of pollen, dust, sap, and dirt. This buildup reduces the air conditioner's ability to release heat to the outdoors. When the unit isn't cycling, turn off its power. Rinse the housing with a garden hose. Use a fin brush to clean the thin metal fins.
Cover the Outdoor Unit
Consider a cover for the outdoor unit of the air conditioner. These are specifically designed for central air conditioning systems. Some are made of mesh and fit over the top and sides of the unit. Other covers are made to cover the top of the unit and about 6 inches down the sides. Avoid covering the unit with a blanket or plastic wrap, which could trap moisture and increase the risk of rust.
