The Unique Needs of Ductless HVAC Systems

The ductless system is one of the most popular heating and cooling options in modern homes today. Instead of operating through a sequence of air ducts linked to an indoor air handling unit and evaporator system, ductless systems break up the indoor unit and fans. This is to distribute the system throughout the house in independent air controllers mounted on the walls. However, ductless HVAC systems have their unique needs.

Broken Air Handling Units

This may be an advantage rather than a disadvantage in terms of ductless systems. If one air handling unit breaks because of an engine failure or other isolated issue, your home’s remaining units will continue to function. The only section of your house that loses heating or cooling in this event is the part with the damaged air handling unit. When one of your air handlers stops working, you’ll still want to call for an immediate repair, but luckily, you do not have to worry about your entire house losing air conditioning as you wait for a technician to show up.

Water Leaks Behind the Air Handling Units

Every wall-mounted air handling unit contains a series of links routed via a basement behind it. This includes a supply line, a condensate line, and a refrigerant line. A condensate line removes moisture from the freezing process so that it does not enter the home. These pipes can leak, and when this happens, water starts to form between the wall and the back of the air handling unit. What ultimately happens is that the wall material weakens, causing the air handling unit to separate from the wall and fall. Of course, this will damage the wall and could destroy the air conditioner. At the initial sign of water damage around an air handling unit, call us to repair your ductless HVAC system!

Refrigerant Leakages

A refrigerant is not unique to ductless systems as all air handlers use it to do their jobs. However, the risk is even higher with ductless systems because there are extra refrigerant lines all over the home. Signs of a coolant leak include a hissing noise and loss of cooling. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, request an immediate repair.
