How Long Will My Home's Backup Generator Last?
Whether it's a heavy storm or an outage, you don't worry about the lights going out. You know your home's backup generator will keep the entire house powered up. That sense of security is priceless.
We install backup generators in Radford and all across southwest Virginia, so we understand. Customers often ask us how long a new generator will last and how long it can run during an emergency. Here's what to expect.
How Many Years Does a Home Backup Generator Last?
Residential backup generators are designed to operate for 25 to 30 years. The average lifespan depends on the type of unit, its size, and the fuel source. You can expect between 700 and 1,500 total hours of emergency power from your home's generator.
How Long Can a Home Backup Generator Keep the Lights On?
When you estimate how long a generator can keep the lights on, keep in mind the unit's fuel type. A gasoline generator can hold enough fuel for approximately 24 hours of continuous power. Propane backup generators can supply emergency power for 48 to 72 hours.
Diesel generators can operate for up to 500 hours. A natural gas generator can run for as long as 3,000 hours. However, we don't recommend operating any type of generator continually for more than 500 hours.
How Do I Make My Home's Backup Generator Last?
Home backup generators are built for long-term durability and seamless operation. There are several things that can maximize a unit's lifespan and performance:
Add a fuel stabilizer in gas-powered home generators
Clear debris from around the unit regularly
Follow all recommendations in the owner's manual
Get annual inspections by certified technicians
