What Does an AC Capacitor Do and Can I Replace Mine?
As a homeowner, it's helpful to understand some basic components of your air conditioning system. This can allow you to easily diagnose an issue and fix it quickly. Today, we're going to focus on the AC capacitor.
What Is an AC Capacitor?
An AC capacitor is a cylindrical metal unit that is found within the outdoor compressor unit. It's responsible for providing power to your air conditioning system when it starts up. Your home's electrical system doesn't have enough power on its own to give your AC system that jolt it needs to start.
Your AC capacitor is like a battery pack. After it helps to start your air conditioning system, it will actively collect and store energy. This way, it's ready to start your system the next time that it turns off and needs to be restarted.
Replacing an AC Capacitor
An AC capacitor is relatively simple to replace for the average homeowner with basic tools. You'll want to start by purchasing a new capacitor with the same model number. Make sure that you turn off the power to your entire system before attempting any repairs.
You'll want to start by removing the access panel to your outdoor compressor unit. Locate the old capacitor, and remove it. Some are held in by screws, and others are held in by compression clips. Always use a screwdriver with an insulated handle to touch the terminals on the AC capacitor. This will help to safely discharge any energy that is stored in the capacitor.
Next, disconnect the wires from the terminals. Make a note of where each wire goes so that you can properly reconnect them. Putting in the new capacitor starts with connecting the wires and screwing or clipping the unit into place. Once the new capacitor is installed, you'll want to turn on the AC power and ensure that it's working correctly.
