What to Do When Your Furnace's Flame Sensor Isn't Working
One very important aspect of any gas furnace is the flame sensor. This little device is responsible for controlling your gas valve in the event that your pilot flame has gone out. While this necessary safety feature is great for protecting your family, it can be a real problem when it stops functioning correctly.
It May Just Need to Be Cleaned
Since your furnace's flame sensor is housed in close vicinity to the pilot flame, it's not uncommon for unwanted dust and debris to end up getting stuck on the sensor itself. When this happens, the burnt-on debris can cover the sensor's eye. This makes it impossible for the sensor to register that a flame is present.
When it reads that there is no flame, your sensor will shut off the gas valve supply to your furnace. Sometimes all that is needed to fix your sensor is to simply clean it. It's best to call in one of our professionals who have the right equipment and knowledge to safely remove your flame sensor and give it a good cleaning.
Replacement May Be Necessary
Most furnace flame sensors are rated to last about five years. Since the lifespan of most furnaces is between 15 and 25 years, it may be necessary for you to have your malfunctioning flame sensor replaced at least twice with each furnace that you have.
Again, it's highly recommended that you call in a professional who can successfully diagnose a malfunctioning flame sensor and safely replace it. Flame sensors are not manufactured to universally fit all furnaces. Therefore, it's imperative that the right flame sensor be installed in your furnace for it to work correctly.
